The Nutty Muslim Professor

March 8 and March 24, 2017

We don’t know the specifics of Azhar Hussain’s curriculum vitae but we can guess that it was less than impressive based upon two salient facts: one, Mr. Hussain, an assistant professor at Indiana State University’s College of Technology, had been notified that his services would no longer be required after the 2017–18 academic year—in other words, the guy had been fired; and two, even though he was a professor at a college of technology, he didn’t know emails can be traced.

That’s just dumb.  How do you presume to teach people about technology and be unaware that emails can be traced?

So anyway, on March 8, 2017, apparently hoping to generate some sympathy and thereby save his job, Mr. Hussain sent some anti-Islamic emails threatening violence to various people on campus, including himself.  The ISU College of Technology—being, you know, a college of technology and therefore comprised of many people who are not dumb—immediately started tracing those emails to determine where they originated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hussain, perhaps worried about discovery after hearing about the tracing efforts, decided to double down on his new-found occupation of being a phony hate crime victim by claiming that someone attacked him from behind as he entered his office on the morning of March 24.

Unfortunately for him, there were four reliable witnesses in the vicinity that morning who threw doubt upon the likelihood of such an attack having taken place... and then the college’s information technologies security engineer traced the emails back to Mr. Hussain himself.

Unsurprisingly, Azhar Husain did not save his job at Indiana State University.  On April 21, the same day he was arrested and booked into Vigo County Jail on a felony charge of obstruction of justice and a misdemeanor charge of harassment, the university announced that his employment had been suspended.

Even in the twisted dysfunctional environment of the modern American university, spreading hate and fear by inventing bogus hate crimes does not (usually) endear you to your employers.
